Artists Statement : Wang Jianxiao is an accomplished artist with a rich artistic journey that spans over four decades. Her career took off in the dynamic 1980s in the Department of Arts and Crafts at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, and later continued her education at the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts, the predecessor of Tsinghua University Academy of Fine Arts, where she focused on lacquer painting. This early experience laid the foundation for her unique creative voice. Eager to expand her artistic horizons, she traveled to Japan to delve into lacquer art techniques, which significantly influenced her style. A subsequent journey to the United States further broadened her artistic perspective, as the influences of abstract expressionism intertwined with her Chinese roots. Wang Jianxiao’s international experiences have highlighted the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures in her artwork. Even after years abroad, the essence of Chinese culture continues to profoundly shape her creations. She often infuses her paintings with poetic insights, resulting in works that radiate an ethereal and mysterious quality, echoing the depth of ancient Eastern traditions. Her aesthetic embodies a “qiyun” from the past, showcasing a vibrant and liberated expression where colors flow like melodies, and textures intertwine to create a captivating, enigmatic, and luminous world. Through each piece, she invites viewers to explore a space where tradition and innovation converge, revealing the intricate tapestry of her artistic spirit.
